The 2026 Publisher Playbook: 9 strategies to boost acquisition, engagement, and loyalty

Chartbeat’s new 2026 Publisher Playbook: 9 Strategies to Boost Acquisition, Engagement, and Loyalty uses two years of data to examine how the reader lifecycle is changing, from discovery to on-site engagement all the way through to the ultimate goal of loyalty.
The report identifies nine strategies publishers can use to respond to these shifts.
Here’s a preview of some of the findings.
Search is declining, but the channels publishers control are growing
Google Search and Google Discover have both seen significant declines over the past two years.

In July 2024, Google Search accounted for roughly 9% of pageviews. By July 2026, that share had dropped to 5%, representing a nearly 46% decline over two years. Google Discover also saw its share of pageviews decrease by 28.4% during the same period.
But the story isn’t just about traffic disappearing. Some channels are growing, and publishers have more control over them.
For instance, between July 2024 and July 2026, dark social grew from 7.1% to 11.3% of pageviews, direct traffic increased from 13.5% to 15.9%, and internal traffic grew from 37.9% to 40.4%.
This shift matters because these channels signal a stronger connection with the audience. Readers who return directly, share stories privately, or explore additional articles are already choosing to engage with a publisher beyond a single search visit.
Takeaways:
- Diversify beyond search. As search referrals decline, look for more ways to reach readers through channels you can influence directly.
- Give readers a reason to keep reading. Make it easy for visitors to discover more content and move from one story to the next.
But getting readers to your site is only half the challenge. Once they arrive, can you keep them engaged?
Readers are spending less time on pages and leaving earlier
Across the Chartbeat network, average engaged time fell to 24.3 seconds in the first half of 2026, compared with 25.5 seconds in 2025 and 26.7 seconds in 2024.

Scroll depth points to the same challenge.
Among readers who do scroll, they’re leaving pages earlier than they did two years ago. The point at which 50% of visitors have left a page dropped from 700 pixels to 500 pixels on desktop, from 1,100 pixels to 800 pixels on mobile, and from 1,200 pixels to 800 pixels on tablet.
For publishers, that can make it harder to turn a new or returning reader into an engaged one. If readers leave before they reach related stories or other opportunities to explore your site, you’re losing chances to build the repeat engagement that can lead to loyalty.
Takeaways:
- Put important content where readers will see it. Don’t wait until the bottom of the page to introduce related stories, newsletter signups, or other ways to keep readers engaged.
- Know where your readers drop off. Scroll behavior can vary by device and page type, so look at your own data to see what’s working.
And if getting readers to stay is becoming harder, the value of the readers who do stick around becomes even more important.
Loyal readers are sticking around as other audiences shrink
As fewer readers return from one visit to the next, the readers who do keep coming back become even more valuable. While new and returning audiences have declined, loyal readers have held their ground.

Average monthly pageviews from loyal readers increased slightly between 2024 and 2026, rising from 14.98 billion to 15.02 billion. Over the same period, pageviews from returning readers fell 8%, while new-reader pageviews declined 14%.
As acquiring new readers becomes more challenging, loyal readers are helping offset those declines and keep overall pageview volume relatively steady.
So how are publishers bringing these loyal readers back?
The answer is one of the key findings in Chartbeat’s 2026 Publisher Playbook.
