To understand the effect AI is having in newsrooms, we analyzed AI-assisted headline tests and non-AI-assisted headline tests from January through June 2025 to see the effects on engagement, click-through rate (CTR), and other metrics.
What we found in our analysis highlights how quickly newsroom behavior is changing — and why pairing data-driven insights with AI experimentation can help shape and boost audience engagement.
What is Headline Testing?
Before we dive into the data, let’s review the foundation of headline testing. Headlines are often the deciding factor in whether a reader clicks through to a story, and testing headlines against each other can reveal the small variances that impact engagement.

Chartbeat Headline Testing, a product designed to compare different headline variations in real-time, helps to identify which headline resonates most with audiences. In 2024, the AI-Generated Headline Suggestions feature was introduced within the Chartbeat Headline Testing suite, and uses generative AI technology to suggest headlines that are optimized to drive higher click-through rates and stronger audience engagement.
As the backdrop for our analysis, we’re comparing the impact of AI headlines to non-AI headlines to see if we can find material differences in the improvements of each type of headline testing.

The impact of AI headlines on CTR
Though non-AI headline experiments still outnumber AI headlines ten to one, we’ve seen the number of AI-assisted headlines more than double. We suspect this increase could be due to greater interest in generative AI and news organizations wanting to leverage this technology in their work.
An important note: AI-generated headlines are flagged by the user rather than being flagged automatically, so there may be limitations to the accuracy of these numbers.
As adoption is growing quickly, publishers are learning that even when AI-generated headlines don’t win a test outright, there’s evidence that their presence has a beneficial impact.
AI headlines vs. original headlines
In our analysis of AI experiments, we found that AI-generated headlines won 27% of the time, while original (non-AI) headlines won 26% of the time. On its own, the difference may not seem dramatic, but it serves as a meaningful signal that the presence of AI is moving content performance in the right direction.
However, this slight win for AI-generated headlines doesn’t paint the full picture. Let’s dig deeper into the data to see whether other engagement metrics support the idea that AI-assisted headlines are providing a measurable lift.
CTR lift with AI-assisted headlines

When we focus specifically on the winning headlines, the advantage of AI becomes more pronounced:
- AI-assisted headlines generate a 55% CTR lift
- Non-AI headlines (from non-AI-assisted experiments) generate a 50% CTR lift
The takeaway: These results suggest that AI has the edge, and winning AI-generated headlines consistently deliver stronger CTR.

When examining all headline tests — including those without AI variants — we see:
- AI-assisted experiments generate a 32% CTR lift
- Non-AI headlines generate a 6% CTR lift
The takeaway: The presence of AI testing itself appears to be beneficial for experiments, potentially leading teams to explore new variations or refine their instincts even if the specific AI variants don’t win.

Building on these CTR findings, our analysis of headline experiments also reveals a significant uplift in engagement when using AI assistance.

Across all completed experiments — including non-winning headline variants — we see that AI delivers benefits across the entire testing process.

When we look specifically at engaged clicks — a deeper measure of how headlines drive meaningful audience interaction — AI-assisted headlines once again come out on top.
